These 'ol mountain people were serious and remain so today. I mean, if they tell you to take notice of their land or belongs[and respect these],you had better take them serious. They do not use idle banter like our northern relatives do. Everything is still rock solid, serious. Excellent portayals opf early appalachian history.trapper johnnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7808733415551134993.post-79817526845488314832012-06-02T12:48:18.126-06:002012-06-02T12:48:18.126-06:00Like Barbara, I'm in the UK, so it could be ye...Like Barbara, I'm in the UK, so it could be years before that reaches here.Pippa Jayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15146591827060731958noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7808733415551134993.post-69142645487991365822012-06-02T09:13:34.571-06:002012-06-02T09:13:34.571-06:00Great review, Donna, and interesting comments, Mar...Great review, Donna, and interesting comments, Marva. (And Barbara, I'm with you on watching anything Kevin Costner).

I was able to watch a little of the series but not enough to get the gist of what spurred the conflict or the characters involved. Would love to watch it from the beginning.

I'm another huge fan of the History Channel, and much prefer even the fringe UFO and Finding Bigfoot series to pointless network reality shows and mindless sitcoms.L. I didn't assume ...Eye of the beholder, I guess. I didn't assume any of the cornpone assumptions about the people. I saw Anse as a successful entrepreneur. And like those of THAT breed, he tended toward ruthless in business dealings. I loved the part where he brought the tombstone into town to show that Cline was trying to defraud him. On the other hand, Anse most likely took advantage of some loose legal wording to get the timber rights in dispute.

I saw Randle McCoy as an honorable, overly religious man who was destroyed by war. A victim of PTSD even then. His rigidity kept him from being as successful as Anse, and that ate at him to the point of mania. His treatment of his daughter, Roseanna, was horrible.

And poor Cotton Top, the only innocent amongst the combatants, paid the price to quell the feud.

These were all complex, intelligent people products of their time and environment. I admired them while being disgusted with their continuing unnecessary violence coming from pride and inflexibility.

Overall, I thought it was an excellent series. I wish my father was still alive. This was just the type of entertainment he loved. Not Old West, but very much like the west of the late 19th Century.

Thanks for reviewing the series. I do love the History channel. Even its silly stuff like UFOs and Bigfoot.Cellophane Queenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08166797508899835493noreply@blogger.com
