Boldly Sewing...

One of the many things that has suffered over the past few years is my cosplaying. Obviously with COVID, conventions were a big no-no, and even when things started opening up again, I was cautious. Weight gain during lockdown meant I wasn't willing to go for my big planned cosplay even with NorCon upcoming, and time was an issue too. So I hadn't done anything in a while.

But with my HRT seeming to help a bit and another handful of masks under my belt, I felt ready and able to progress to something more adventurous. First thing on the agenda was clearing my sewing space so I could actually use it. The Christmas holiday had given me time to clear away the junk stacked in front of my sewing cupboard, but not to sort it. With spring half-term and a spate of rain followed by storms Dudley, Eunice, and Franklin making outdoor activities (beyond storm prep and then repair) a definite no, I had zero excuse. I also inherited a better chair from youngest (who inherited a better one from middle child, who got a new one). My sewing cupboard and the storage above were sorted, labelled, and ready for some action.

Patterns sorted into separate sci-fi and fantasy collections. There is also one of 'normal' patterns.

I'd had a request for a commission, but brain fog and lack of enthusiasm meant I'd shied away from the task despite buying the fabric.
Time to bite the bullet, even if the client might have changed their mind by now. I discovered that one of my cats likes chewing pattern paper. The other likes to roll herself in my fabric, then claw her way out. Neither were activities I was happy about. Despite that, I did manage to get everything cut out and marked up by the end.

I'm now back at work so don't have the luxury of time to spend all day on this project, but at least it's finally in motion. And it's good to be creating again.

NorCon Revisited #scifi #fantasy

Despite a super hectic year, we did get time to make our annual visit to NorCon, although only for the one day. Neither hubs or I got to make new cosplays this year, and youngest decided to revisit his Plague Knight costume, so it was only eldest and middle child in new ones.
But first, some real nostalgia for me. Some 30 years ago I got my photo taken with the then 7th Doctor Sylvester McCoy (also of Radagast the Brown from The Hobbit). And I got the chance to relive that excitement at NorCon.

Amidala, the level of cosplaying my skills and budget would love to aspire to...

Youngest revisiting his Plague Knight cosplay

My older two cosplaying brother and sister mutants Quicksilver (Avengers version) and Scarlet Witch.

The hair-raising effect of prolonged wig wearing!

Hell, yeah, I'm shooting first!
And of course, I couldn't resist some merch...

SF CON TIME AGAIN!

Yes, TREKkers, Whoverians, STAR WARs fans and SF geeks of all stripes, it's that time again. Time for the biggest fan-run science fiction convention in the country--Shore Leave! I'm setting up shop as we speak in the Dealers' Room to sell and sign my newly covered Interstellar Rescue series novels, and I'll be sitting on two authors' panels this year, too. The topics couldn't be more my style: Writing Great Women Characters and Great Genres that Go Together--or Not.

This will be the 41st year of SF shenanigans in Towson, Maryland, with a long list of authors, scientists, and, of course, actors from a number of popular TV shows, both old and new. Nichelle Nichols (Classic TREK's Uhura, naturally) is making a stop on her farewell tour, for pictures and autographs. But I'm personally psyched to see Anson Mount (currently in Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Pike; formerly in Hell on Wheels as Cullen Bohannon), though it's difficult to slip away from the sales table to hear my favorite actor make a presentation.

Still, the best part of Shore Leave is watching the constant parade of cosplayers circling the Dealers' Room. Such creativity! And, of course, meeting readers and other fans just to talk SF/SFR!

Can't wait for the fun to start! (Follow the action with me on my Facebook author page!)

Cheers, Donna

Countdown to #NorCon #cosplay

Nor-con is fast approaching - this coming weekend in fact, though we're only going on the Sunday - and one wall plus various corners of my front room currently look like a costume department.
For 13yo's Witch-king, I still need to find a way to attach the newly completed scabbard to his belt - the sword and rather terrifying flail were both built by my husband after he took on the non-fabric sections of the cosplay leaving me free to tackle modifying the cloak and making the sword belt. I've given up with making the gauntlets now.

I've also still got youngest's Mark II Luigi to finish as he outgrew the original. Eep.
In the meantime, I thought I'd take my Anakin cosplay up a notch with a wig, being as I didn't get time to make myself a new cosplay this year. But I think I'll have to stick with my blond spikes and padawan braid...
Hubs is actually dressing up too this year but I won't tell you as who. I'll post pictures after the con and maybe offer a little prize for the first person to get it. :P

Status Update
Unexpected is getting some final tweaks. Although it's scheduled for release as part of an anthology, the thought of not releasing a new title this year is making me twitchy. I haven't gone a year without publishing something new since 2011! So I may do a limited time run of it this month just because..

Chook Update
Fizzgig is finally regrowing her feathers, thought she's still showing a lot of blue pins rather than brown feathers. Here are my girls enjoying the very nice sunshine on my patio just moments ago (I'm also enjoying the sun as I type this, coffee in hand and back door open. I may have to take my hoodie off!

Chick Update
Marvel and Firefly are now a month old and adorably scruffy as they shed the last of their fluff for much needed feathers. This is probably our last chick adventure - we've discussed buying one day old sexed chicks and placing them under expert mama Effie but this relies on some being available at the right time ie when she's broody. Timing is everything. It's more likely we'll buy young hens in the spring once our new coop and run are done and egg laying season is upon us, and possibly a different breed from our usual Pekins.

'Crazy Jedi Mama' at #InvasionColchester #scifi #cosplay

Oh, I'm baaaaaaack!
Wow, what a summer. August absolutely whizzed by and we did so much that I can't even remember half of it! So I'm going to work backwards and begin with Invasion Colchester.

And what is that? Well...
'Invasion Colchester is an annual fundraising event (held on Sept 2nd in 2017), supporting local charities. It involves Stormtroopers, Jedi and the like...'
It's now been running for seven years, getting bigger every time. We've been to the last three, but this time I'd decided we should go in cosplay, and the monsters agreed. This was the perfect opportunity to test out the outfits I'd made them for Nor-Con this coming October (though 12yo's Witch-king wasn't fully completed). Hubs declined, settling for a geek tee as his only concession.

I was pleased with the recognition the outfits got and the photo requests - mostly for 12yo in his Witch-king, although there was some muttering when he got miscalled as Sauron, and even Skeletor (?!). The odd Nazgul or Ringwraith were allowed to pass. :P I wasn't too happy about the photos taken without request (grrr) but this isn't an enclosed convention, so normal con rules of etiquette apparently don't apply. Hubs trailed behind listening for comments (I thought he was pretending not to be with us, lol) and overheard someone refer to me as a 'crazy Jedi mum' (hence the post title). I'll take that one. :P
We now know what problems need fixing with the outfits as they stand - a new balaclava is on order for 12yo as he had major trouble seeing through the one we'd bought because it kept creeping over his eyes. The mask held up well (thanks to hubs who took over the construction while I worked on the fabric side) but the trailing, tattered ends of his cloak definitely needed a little taking up. My Tauriel had problems with her quiver detaching itself but the ear tips stayed put amazingly well! And sadly it seems my youngest has had a growth spurt and barely fit into his Luigi, so I'm going to have to remake that in the next month along with corrections and final touches to the Witch-king. Just as well I'd already given up on my planned cosplay and have settled for my existing Anakin one. Sigh. Next year...

The Witch-king gets schooled by Professor Trelawney (Harry Potter)
My Luigi met up with a Mario!
You can check out all the photos for the event by going HERE (and see if you can spot me in them). I didn't take all that many of the cosplay (still too self conscious to ask even while happy to be asked myself) but I did take a few in the film props room.

All in all, a fun and totally worthwhile event if you ever happen to be in the area. But I know what you really stopped by for - the chooks and chicks!

Chick Update
Despite the sad and unexplained loss of our only female - Flick - the boys have been thriving and are now ready for new homes. Sadly we won't be able to keep them due to the noise, though they aren't crowing as yet.

However, we put six new hatching eggs under another broody, this time our mottled black, Pitch. After the perfect score of six out of six on our last hatch, this batch gave us more of a test. Firstly they arrived filthy and one with a crack clearly NOT from postal damage (this was a different seller), plus we had no laid date so could only guess at a hatching date (28th of August). I was going to bin the cracked egg but after visiting my favourite chicken forum, I took the advice of putting nail varnish over the crack.

Candled at seven days, one was immediately clear as infertile but the cracked egg looked good. At fifteen days, a second egg was discarded as unviable. Sadly at sixteen days the cracked egg shattered and we lost that chick. :(
But we still had three eggs going. As with our previous hatch, there was no signs of the chicks emerging on their due date, but I could hear some movement. Two days late we had tapping, cheeping, and by the evening one egg had pipped! I had high hopes of waking to at least one hatched chick.
Then disaster. When checking the eggs the following morning, I found the pipped egg stone cold with no signs of life. I could just see the beak through a split in the membrane. Either it had got too cold overnight or run out of energy to break free. I was gutted. Since it already seemed all was lost I started breaking open the shell to check if the chick might have been damaged in some way...and it moved! With nothing to lose, I broke the chick out completely (you're not advised to do this but with the chick so close to gone I didn't see how I could make things worse) and dashed indoors yelling for hubs to do a hot water bottle to warm chickie up.

Amazingly, our little Lazarus pulled through. An hour after warming it up it was moving and cheeping. Three hours later we had a lively, noisy little fluffball. We've now named it Marvel.

Which just goes to show, there's always hope. With a second egg pipped I was waiting on that hatching so that I could sneak Marvel back under mum, since I'm not set up to hand raise chicks. I thought Pitch might reject the first chick if it just suddenly appeared rather than hatch. Egg two hatched without issue later in the day so I returned Marvel. Pitch didn't seem to take to the chicks all that well, pecking them until I got them both snuggled under her wings. Maybe I was going to have to raise them after all...

But 48 hours later, Pitch was calling them to eat, showing them how to drink, and fiercely defensive of them when I tried to interfere. They're now five days old, eating and drinking, and have already ventured out of the nest box to explore the corner of our summer house where they've taken up temporary residence.
Oh, and chickie number two is now called Firefly.
Just so you can see the difference in size!

Egg number three is currently under another broody - my chocolate frizzle Fizzgig - because Pitch has lost interest in it with two chicks to care for, but the egg is still making noises. Will it ever hatch? Stay tuned...
