Snippet Monday: Escape from Shar Burk

Escape from Shar Burk is the third of my Morgan's Misfits books - three women working together bucking the strict class system in the society they live in. Each of the three books features a romance as well as a mystery in a space opera setting.

Shar Burk is an enormous space station run by Governor Soldar. He's as crooked as the proverbial dog's hind leg and he has an appetite for beautiful women. They never last long. Marisa was one of those beautiful women. But she got lucky.

Here's a snippet from early in the book:

"Do you remember the fall?" Chet's voice was soft, full of sympathy.

Marisa nodded. Every moment of it, in terrifying slo-mo. "Yes. I clutched at balconies trying to slow my fall, smacked hard against one. That was probably what broke my arm. I remember hitting my head against something and the pain as my face opened up. Then I hit the awning."

Marisa stared at the table top, at her hand holding the half-full mug and took a sip. Her hand shook.

"Sympathy," Toreni said softly.

"Yeah." Marisa took another, larger gulp from the mug. Sympathy was nice but it didn't get you anywhere. She'd get even. One day. Soldar, too. She'd see them dead. Both of them.

The Misfits are off on another planet-hopping adventure.

When Chet, Toreni, and Jirra rescue Marisa, mistress of Shar Burk’s brutal governor Soldar, from certain death they think they’re just helping a fellow woman to a new life. But what did Marisa do to earn a death sentence? Is it just a couple of dictators flexing their muscles? Or something much more dangerous? They set off to follow a tenuous trail where Marisa discovers there’s a whole new world off Shar Burk space station and men much nicer than Soldar.

But by taking in Marisa, the team has been noticed by Soldar. Helped by a traitor in Fleet Intelligence, he’s on their trail before they discover his plans. And he wants them all dead.

Escape from Shar Burk is finally finished

I'm delighted to announce that Misfits 3, Escape from Shar Burk, is finally finished, edited etc and has been pushed out from the shore into the world wide web.

It has been a long road to travel for various reasons – but it's done. It's the third Misfits book and right now I'm saying it's the last one. At the beginning of the series in Kuralon Rescue you met my three misfits.

  •    Jirra is a Hasta ex-Fleet engineer who is in love with a Mirka officer. She refused to marry the man her parents had picked for her, so they hired an assassin to kill her.
  •  Chet is Mirka and was a detective who was framed for the murder of her partner, the man she loved. She's out of a job.
  • Toreni is an elite Shuba who did time in the Union Fleet as a marine. But she doesn't want to be a security guard, she wants to be a chef.
All three women don't quite fit in their paternalitic, regimented society where everybody belongs to a class and eveybody has a pre-ordained role to fill.

In Kuralon Rescue the women help a political prisoner to escape a prison planet.

Jirra’s on the run, Siena’s rescuing her lover, Toreni wants Master Chef status and Chet wants her reputation back. Four women, four goals, and one very small ship. Add a fleet request to free a rebel, the promise of little to no help and a caste-defined society simmering with discontent on the edge of explosion.

Now, on their own, they’re staging an escape from a backwater prison planet and navigating the murky terrain of dreams forbidden by the rigid caste system underpinning their culture. Success demands more than team work. They’ll have to jettison their own prejudices and forge relationships free of the rules and caste lines.

There’s more than just lives at stake. There’s dreams and a possible tomorrow more fragile than gossamer.

In the next book, Rescuing Romila, the three come across a young woman who is being used as a mule for drug deliveries.

When Jirra and Toreni rescue Romila from a raid on her antiques business the Misfits start off on a mission to uncover a drug-smuggling operation. A new, very potent drug is on the market, hidden in statues of ice warriors carved on a remote world.

But all’s not well within the team. Toreni and Chet have fallen out, Toreni has received an offer that might be too good to refuse, and Jirra has doubts about her future.

When the drug-smuggling operation morphs into something even more dangerous, the Misfits must resolve their differences. If they don’t act together, and quickly, many lives will be at risk. Including their own.

In this third book the Misfits rescue a woman slated to die. But what did she overhear to earn her a death sentence? The girls find themselves involved in much more than a murder case. And while they're saving the Galaxy, all the loose ends are tied up.

It's interesting that as I finished writing/editing this one, I started getting plausible ideas for a new Puss in Space story, so that's where I'll be heading next.

In the meantime, here's Escape from Shar Burk.
