Skiffy Rommer's Roundup

I'm back, and posting today from sunny San Diego. My WIP "Planets" is keeping me beyond busy of late, but I wanted to pop in to post links to some great articles from elsewhere (mostly io9).

First of all, here's one that's a follow-up to my Proto-Dog article of a few weeks ago. Our understanding of evolution is encountering a major paradigm shifts, and any SciFiRom writer worth their DNA should be aware of the possibilities this new information presents:

Another Skiffy Rommers must read from io9: Selected excerpts from Science Fiction Romance.

Read a review of the Science Fiction Romance HEARTFAST from Texas Authors of Romance Fiction.

Here's a discussion on Dear Author entitled If You Like Lois McMaster Bujold

That's it for today. Just wanted to let you all know I'm still alive and kicking...and editing...endlessly editing. *sigh*

  1. Alive, kicking and warm. Baby it's cold outside in New England. Brrrr. Have fun in SD, Laurie. Hopefully a chat will be in order real soon. :)
House flipping madness draws to a close and the Skiffy Rom Muse is going haywire.
If I start one more story...
Oh well, you know how it goes.

  2. Hang it there, Dawn. It's almost over. Scary thought that your muse would become more active than it already is. LOL

Yes, a chat is definitely in order. Talk to you soon.

  3. San Diego?! I'm so jealous.

That io9 piece was something, eh? At least they acknowledged the genre is gaining a reputation for sophistication.

  4. Yes, Heather, though it's an uphill battle to fight, I think the science is getting more sophisticated while the romance still caters to our basic emotions. The two combined makes for a great read. (Now if the publishing houses would only take this to heart and stop branding great SFR stories with romance covers.)

Oh, and San Diego was great. I did a little research while I was there prowling the insides of an old Russian Foxtrot sub. :)

  5. *And* you got inside a sub?! Righteous!

I hear you on the SFR covers. Smart Bitches recently contributed to The Forever Clinch, an article at Publisher's Weekly about clinch covers which explored how ingrained they were. But if covers are going to evolve now's the time to explore something fresh for readers like us, when romance is continuing to split into different sub-genres.

Unfortunately, no one seems to be listening to the authors but maybe they'll eventually listen to the folks who buy the books ;)

  6. Yup, Heather. Did you see my post on the sub experience? I'm all into sub culture now. Found a great animated series too, that I'll be posting 'best of' episodes for the next week or so. Not sure the humor is for everyone but it floored me--as in rolling on. :)

Agree on the covers. Yes, I know, romance sells, but SFR has so many other qualities to promote. Comparing the two covers of GAMES OF COMMAND, the original and the one the "branders" came up with, I know which one is my favorite by far.
