Score!

Not so long ago, I wrote a lament on this blog about the demise of the Defying Gravity television series--an imaginative science fiction program with a nice dose of romance.  DG built a fast and loyal fanbase during its short-lived time on network televsion, only to be canceled just as it was being discovered by many fans.  (Maybe it should have been named Defying Logic?)  But all is not lost.  The complete first (and only) season of Defying Gravity became available on Amazon just this week.  Sold!

I can't wait to start all over again from the beginning and re-experience the episodes I enjoyed so much, leading up to the five or so shows that never aired on American television.

Yup, this one goes on my DVD rack in the honored spot right next to Firefly and Serenity.  I'm a happy camper.

  1. It's on sale at a store near here, ShopKo, so I'm going to get it tommorrow! I can't wait.

I still think the two main reasons it was canceled were the lack of advertising and that they basically started the story in the wrong place. I think if they'd started with the discovery of the artifact instead of trying for mystery with too many flashbacks, they'd have drawn in even more people.

But I am so, so happy that they kept their word and made a box set! Yay! Should we cross our fingers for a novelization?

  2. Anna, a novel would be fantastic. Or a movie? (Like they did with Firefly.) Can I dream? :D

You have a good point on where they started the show. Although the flashbacks were good for character-building, they often delayed getting to the significant scenes.

I haven't seen any of the shows that weren't aired, so for me it ended with the fractal garden/singing "Beta" scene. What a cliffhanger! I'm dying to see what happened next.

  3. Laurie,

It was great. And it ended in a place that leaves you hungry for more, but stops short of making you want to throw things at the TV.

I so wish they'd re-pitch to SyFy channel. Bring back both DG and Firefly!

  4. Anna, I sat down and had a DG marathon to watch all the last episodes. Wow. Yes, if it had to end, that was a good place. I'd love to see more of the story and characters, but if it never happens, at least it left me with a positive feeling.

My husband, who isn't a huge SF fan, sat through all the episodes with me and couldn't stop watching either. At the end he said, "So WHY was this show canceled?"

Yeah, there's a lot people asking the same question.
