Rafe Gordon, the hero of Not Fade Away, Interstellar
Rescue Series Book 4. is a soldier. As a field
agent for the Interstellar Council for Abolition and Rescue, fighting is all
he’s ever known. He joined his parents in the field as a teenager, and his life
has been a constant series of extraction missions, sabotage runs and skirmishes
with deadly aliens ever since.
But now Rafe faces a battle he’s
ill-prepared to fight. His father Del, once Chief of Field Operations for
Rescue and a fierce alien fighter in his own right, is confined to a wheelchair
and losing his mental faculties to dementia. Rafe has only just taken on his
new role as Del’s caregiver when the old man becomes the target of alien
assassins, forcing Rafe to make a bold move: he must hide his father in the
small mountain town of his birth on Earth
Rafe is a man of action—gruff, impulsive,
not given to social graces. Not surprisingly, he chafes under the restrictions
of his new circumstances, unable to do anything but wait for an attack that may
or may not come at any time. He feels worse than useless in his new role and
overcompensates by being more than protective of Del in the small community of
Masey.
Then, of course, there’s Charlie McIntyre,
the home care nurse hired to help Del and the heroine of our story. If Rafe has
little experience taking care of an old man with dementia in a wheelchair, he
has even less with women and none with love. This excerpt
describes his state of mind as he anticipates a first date with Charlie.
Charlie wouldn’t arrive for another 15
minutes, and Rafe debated cracking open a beer in the interim. He decided
against it and spent the time pacing instead. Borazt! He felt like a raw recruit on his first mission. Why should
this be so difficult? Charlie had said it wasn’t really even a “date,” which
he’d looked up and meant “a romantic appointment.” Though, when you think about
it, why would she be afraid to call it what it so obviously was? Unless she
didn’t feel about him like he felt about her.
And how was that exactly? Damn if he knew! He was a soldier. He knew about
lust—the physical reactions a male body had to a beautiful female. The need.
The hunger. The obsessive behavior of a predator on the hunt. All of that
kicked him in the gut every time Charlie walked in the room, so hard he could
barely breathe sometimes.
But it was what happened when she wasn’t around that he had never felt
before and didn’t understand. He didn’t just fantasize about her body or her
face; when he was away from her he longed for her voice, or her laughter, or
her calm presence. He wanted to spend time with her just talking. What did that
mean? He didn’t spend time with anyone
just talking.
And the worst part? He had no one to ask
about any of it—no friend, no sister, no brother-in-arms. Just a crazy old man
who used to be his father.
Maybe he was just as crazy for agreeing to
this night out with Charlie. It was so risky, in so many ways. He might say the
wrong thing and give himself away. He might give Charlie too wide a glimpse at
his true self and risk scaring off their one anchor to this place. And, worst
of all, he might fan the spark of emotion he was feeling for her into a flame he
couldn’t control.
Rafe is right, of course; that date is
risky. Because Charlie does have feelings for him, and things take their
natural course. But the quiet little town of Masey is about to get a lot livelier—and Rafe will have plenty
of explaining to do in the light of a new day.
Earth shielded his secrets--
Until her love unlocked his
heart.
Rescue agent Rafe Gordon is human, though
Earth has never been his home. But when his legendary father Del becomes the
target of alien assassins, Rafe must hide the dementia-debilitated hero in the
small mountain town where the old man was born—Masey, North Carolina, USA,
Earth.
Home care nurse Charlie McIntyre and her
therapy dog, Happy, have never had such challenging clients before. Del’s
otherworldly “episodes” are not explained by his diagnosis, making Charlie
question everything about her mysterious charge and his dangerously attractive
son. Rafe has the answers she needs, but Charlie will have to break through his
wall of secrets to get them.
As the heat rises between Charlie and Rafe,
the deadly alien hunters circle closer. The light they seek to extinguish
flickers in the gloom of Del’s fading mind—the memory of a planet-killer that
threatens to enslave the galaxy.

I talk about how “cozy” SFR and my own “contemporary” SFR both turn the world
upside down for unwary heroines (and readers!).
I’ll also be taking a turn on the Science Fiction Romance
Brigade’s Meet the Author Monday on June 4.

Rafe and Charlie's date was one of my favorite scenes in Not Fade Away. :)
