Lost Girls: Do They Work as Romance Heroines?

The basis of the article is focused on the SyFy Channel series, Lost Girls, which centers on a "succubus fae." Yes, I raised my eyebrows too, since I've always considered fae (faeries) and succubus (demons) separate entities. Hurray for the power of creative mash-ups.

In this series, the central figure, Bo, apparently takes on partners of either sex and is allowed a great amount of sexual freedom in the story lines. There's a fair amount of commentary on why, although frowned upon by some groups, it makes for a great "sexually empowered" character.

No doubt. But does it make for a great Romance character? Now the slope is getting much slipperier.

So let's talk about sex.

Romance fiction, by it's very nature, has an unwritten law that once the heroine meets the hero, sex with another partner (at least to the level of sexual penetration) is out. The heroine is expected to be loyal to the hero no matter the level of their conflict or separation. 

The reverse is also true in many novels--the hero remains sexually loyal to the heroine--but certainly not all books follow this rule. (In the case of MM, FF and threesome Romances, you can switch out heroine or hero in the above statements as needed.)

I've read Romances where the hero is allowed a much greater freedom on this front than the heroine, and I've read reviews about one Historical Romance where the hero uses sex with another woman as a weapon against the heroine. Reportedly, he is later "redeemed" by excessive groveling to win back the heroine's love and respect. (Really? Groveling can make amends for a complete breech of trust and an intentional effort to crush a partner emotionally?) I haven't read the book, so I can't judge the dynamics of the story--there are some authors who could probably pull this off--but I'm not sure this sort of hero would be my cup of tea.

But that said, I do have characters in my work--both male and female--who cross the boundaries of sexual loyalty. Though I truly believe the circumstances warrant the breech of romantic etiquette, I know this is a button-pusher for some. There are bound to be some who object because they simply can't accept infidelity on the part of a character in any form, even if circumstances give the character good reasons for their actions or they remain mentally loyal to their partner. 

Romantic Erotica generally has more freedom to push the envelope on these taboos--or break it entirely. Straight erotica has no such rule and often ventures intentionally into the opposite extreme. The main characters have no sexual loyalty to any partner. The more action she or he gets, the better. 

With erotica's popularity, it seems some of these trends in sexual freedom for characters may transfer to more traditional romance, especially those that are indie published or don't have a Big Five editor who may request edits to avoid elements that could offend some readers. Though Paranormal Romance seems to be getting more liberal on this front, but these don't seem to be "true Romance." There is no central romantic partner per se, and so there is no one who would be wounded by the main characters actions. 

What I do think works well in all Romance are heroines who are self-assured and don't act out with petty jealousy when the hero is lusted after or even takes up with a rival. Though hurt on the inside by betrayal--whether real or merely perceived--strong characters remain tough and resolute on the outside. How they deal with infidelity (perceived or otherwise) helps define their strength of character. Conversely, if they are the one who has wronged a partner (perceived or otherwise) they are respectful of their partners feelings.

What are your thoughts? Do you think modern guidelines are relaxing and more sexual freedom will become a part of the Romance genre? 

As a writer, do you or would you include a character who ventures outside a partnership with the main love interest? 

As a reader, what are your preferences? Do you prefer characters who are totally true to their main romantic interest or could you accept a character who strays if their reasons for doing so are acceptable and forgivable?

  1. I write a great many same-sex romances and erotic romances. My guys vary widely by personality. Some are monogamous. Some find themselves in situations where they are required to have sex with people other than their partner. Some are in menage a trois or group relationships. So far, I have only been criticized once for non-monogamy, and it was by someone who wanted the main couple to be exclusive, when their positions don't really permit it.

  2. It really depends on the story and the characters. One of my old favourites is Friday by Robert Heinlein. The main female character does a lot of bed hopping in the search for happiness, become part of a group who are all married (though they tend to pair off within the marriage), and though she was loyal to her friends I don't think she applied it to her sexual relationships. Although as a genetically created human, she saw herself as not qualifying as human, so perhaps that affected her perceptions. And yet I loved her character and never judged her badly for her behaviour. I wouldn't permit my real life hero to be disloyal, but I can accept it in certain stories.

  3. What a timely post! I'm caught up in the second arc of my space opera, and the hero is basically a male version of Innara from Firefly. I'm having so much fun, and it's causing a lot of conflict between them. He's part of a sub-culture the heroine knows exists, but has always ignored as something that didn't affect her. Except now it does and she can't get away from it.

    Like Innara, he loves what he does and doesn't want to give it up. As their romance grows it'll bother her more and more, and start to bother him. It's stretching me as a romance writer, in awesome ways.

    By the end of this three-book arc they will be together in a monogamous relationship, but I have no idea how they're going to get there.

  4. Fidelity is such a hot topic! I don't think I've ever had one of my heroines ever be unfaithful. I'm not sure that a hero has either. He might have been a bit of lad before he meets my girl, but after that- no, he doesn't fall. (Unless someone with a better memory than me knows better) I got close to letting a couple of heroes do it and then didn't. I think because I don't like to read it. I get very uncomfortable if the MCs sleep around - unless it's a plot point in a particular type of book.
    It's a very fine line to tread as to whether infidelity works in your story or not. If the pair have split - then fine - even if they then get back together, but a deliberate act of unfaithfulness sits very uneasy with me.

  5. I'm with Barbara on this one. My heroes and heroines can live any kind of wild lives BEFORE they meet, but after? No way. I'm old school and believe love is naturally exclusive. Remember that song from the '50's "I Only Have Eyes for You"? That's the way it works in my stories anyway. Come on. Romance is SUPPOSED to be a fantasy!

  6. Thanks to everyone for your comments. I think I'm pretty much in tune with Donna's thoughts, except that my stories have some twists that push the envelope on exclusivity a bit.

    It's not that one member of a partnership chooses to be unfaithful, but that there are extenuating circumstances involved or perceptions about the existence of the partnership. (This is very hard to explain without outright spoilers!) Even so, I think it's going to be very much like walking a tightrope with readers.
